Company description

Decentralized Pictures (DCP) is a nonprofit organization based on an idea that artistic talent may be discovered in innovative ways. The project was founded by Hollywood screenwriter Roman Coppola ("Moonrise Kingdom", "CQ", "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III", "Bram Stoker's Dracula").

DCP’s mission is to support independent filmmaking and provide financial and filmmaking resources. Through user consensus, DCP had set up a democratic film fund, online community of creatives, film-fans, and industry professionals who decide who is most deserving of support. Here you can submit your film idea, and if the world agrees with you, DCP will help you realize it.

Project overview and features

We were approached by DCP to make a highly artistic explainer video. The purpose of the video was to simply explain how the project works and to attract a wide audience.

Client’s goals and requirements

  • Attract more users
  • Earn the trust of the viewers, delve into their problems and offer solutions
  • Show that the project is highly connected with independent filmmaking
  • Target audience - 20-40 y.o. screenwriters
  • Placement - website and social networks

Business objectives and current industry issues

For this project, we opted for frame-by-frame animation, as it is much more artistic and also has the most film-like style. It was one of our first cel animation videos, so we were eager to try new styles and were very excited about this chance. DCP’s team was also willing to experiment because of the nature of their project and request. So it was a perfect match.

The video took quite a long time to create, and at some point during the animation stage, the script was almost completely reworked. But thanks to close collaboration with Roman Coppola, combined with our expertise, we got a great dynamic video!

Work done

Since the task was pretty high-scale, we hired cel animators from the Gobelins School of Images, as this is probably the best source of animators on the planet. So the visual part of the project was in the hands of professionals.

To build proper communication, we adapted to the client’s busy schedule and were flexible.

The only thing we had difficulty with while working on the video was the plot. But we managed to solve this problem together with DCP’s team, whose contribution was really great and helpful. This shows how important it is to be online with the production team and share feedback as much as possible.

User roles

10 people were involved in the creation of the video:

  • Creative Strategist defined the client's goals and offered creative ways to achieve them.
  • Art Director (Vlad Baranavkin) controlled the stages of creating a video and offered non-standard solutions to problems that arose during the production process.
  • 2 illustrators (Sasha Krechman, Olga Serdyukova) created film-like frames.
  • Scriptwriter created a clear and understandable story for the video.
  • Animator animated the video.
  • Sound Designer made sound effects for the video and chose the music.
  • Project Manager monitored the progress of the project from start to finish, controlled deadlines, took part in idea generation.

It is also worth noting the participation of DCP’s team, which played an important role in the project, brought a lot of creative ideas and helped to achieve such a cool result!

Client review

"It was a pleasure to work with Lemons - they understood our needs very well and processed the script we were planning into a wonderful explainer in a short amount of time. If the community's impressions are any indication, the videos were a home run! Will definitely collab again!"
